My grandma came to live with us in Tampa Bay, Florida more frequently, and this was surprising.
She suddenly always seemed to have a good reason to want to be at my mom’s house and not hers. My mother suspected that something was wrong, and it had to do with grandma’s comfort. Ever since they were young, grandma would never compromise her comfort. She would go to extra lengths to ensure that the house was comfortable and smelled fresh all the time. One time as kids, there was a foul smell that seemed to blow from the AC. No amount of cleaning seemed to fix it. Grandma was frustrated and decided to visit her sister in a different town for two weeks. She only came back after grandpa informed her that the AC expert had fixed the odor issue. With this background, mom knew that the HVAC system in grandma’s house was compromised, and she didn’t know how to tell her. Truthfully, it turned out that the AC was not working correctly. She would get higher bills when she lived in Tampa Bay, Florida every month, and therefore she decided to be staying at her house only for a few days and switch off the AC most of the day when she was not around. She confessed this after mom coaxed her for hours. Everyone laughed at this strategy. As much as we loved her being around, we knew she was not as happy as when she was at her own home. Grandma hardly left her house unless she had to. Mom and dad came together and brought in an HVAC contractor to fix the AC. A few components were worn out; hence the unit had to overwork to compensate. Once it was fixed, the energy bills stabilized, and grandma was happy to be back at her Tampa Bay, Florida home.
