My kids were excited when they found out there was a fresh addition to Busch Gardens, Tampa Bay, FL. We had been coming to Tampa to visit my in-laws every summer since I got married. My boys’ favorite thing to do while in Tampa was to go to Busch Gardens, and my in-laws made sure they bought the tickets early. They told us they got big discounts since they lived in Tampa, and it was for their grandsons. Grandpa couldn’t wait to tell them they had tickets to the new water park. Once they got the dates when we were visiting, he bought tickets to Tampa’s biggest water, Adventure Island. He had a private cabana so we could relax out of the sun, but he wanted the boys to have fun. He showed the boys the brochure he got so they could see what there was to do. My oldest had to read the entire brochure out loud. He said it was 30 acres of water-drenched fun in the sun. It features the ultimate combination of high-speed thrills and tropical, tranquil surroundings for guests of all ages. My husband and father-in-law had their swim trunks on and were ready for water fun with the boys. I had on my shorts and t-shirt and said I would enjoy the cabana more than the water fun, and my mother-in-law agreed. While the guys raced down rapids, waterfalls and corkscrews, my mother-in-law and I relaxed in the cabana and drank pina coladas. We built a friendship dreaming of being back at the house in the air conditioning.

Since Sioux Falls, SD is a landlocked state, there was no way to get the USS South Dakota Battleship to the state.

It wasn’t until they demolished the battle ship that there was a possibility of bringing it Sioux Falls.

That’s when a group of volunteers organized and gained access to part of the battleship. They carefully and thoroughly they put the parts together and turned it into a museum. The small museum gives you the opportunity to experience what it felt like to serve and fight during WWII, and what life was like on the ship. There are volunteers who are happy to tell you all about the ship and the battles she was involved in. I thought the ship was amazing, and it was free. They tell you donations are appreciated, because it pays for the upkeep of the USS South Dakota Battleship Memorial museum. The first time my father went to see the USS Dakota Battleship, it was winter, and it wasn’t open. I’m assuming it was closed because of how cold it gets in Sioux Falls. I don’t know if they don’t have heating on the ship, but I don’t know if they have air conditioning either, since I went in the fall this year. It disappointed my father that there weren’t placards that talked about some sights, but I was happy. I couldn’t imagine life on the battleship. I promised dad that the next time he came to visit, it would need to be during the spring or fall. He told me the next time he came to visit, it would be to stay, and that would be earlier this fall.

I was living in the northern part of the US, and our winters were always well below freezing.

There were days when the temperatures were below zero. I wanted to go to the University of Tuscaloosa, because it was an excellent school, but I should have done more homework about the area. Had I known that a wintry day in winter was in the upper fifties, I’m not sure I would have come to this school. When it was time for winter break, I was ready to go home. I was telling mom and dad how hot it was in Tuscaloosa, AL, and dad reminded me he had tried to tell me this. Not everywhere was as cold as it was at home. We sometimes had summer days that didn’t get out of the fifties. It wasn’t often, but it happened. I was happy with the university, but I couldn’t get used to the heat. Dad told me I should stay there over the summer and let my body get used to the heat, but I wasn’t sure that was going to happen. I enjoyed being home, and they had excellent schools here. He forced me to go back to school after winter break and told me if I still wasn’t happy, he would let me transfer to one school in our state. I already knew I was going to transfer to a different school. There was no way I was going to survive in Tuscaloosa without air conditioning every day. I just wish my dad understood that and let me transfer now.

When I heard we were taking a trip along the Apache Trail and riding the Dolly Steamboat, I got excited.

I thought we would be cruising along inside a steamboat, and there would be air conditioning.

It was early morning, but it was still over 80 degrees when we got into the van at 6:30 AM. We traveled along the Apache Trail Scenic Drive Venture and headed east of the valley. We were spoon deep into the Sonoran Desert. It was fun to stop at Tortilla Flat where we got to eat lunch. Tortilla Flat is a small town of six people and was a stagecoach stop in Arizona. Once we boarded the Dolly Steamboat, we took a cruise around Canyon Lake. They told us to watch for eagles and long horn sheep, but I didn’t see any. I figured it was too hot for the animals to be out. I guessed they were smarter than I was, because it was now 105 degrees and it hadn’t peaked for the day. We got to see some incredible views when the cruise took us into the Sonora Desert.I heard the narrator talk about the Lost Dutchman State Park, but I was too busy looking for sheep and eagles, and didn’t catch what he was saying. When they said we were going to take a ten minute walk into the desert to have some desert plants pointed out, I was done. All I wanted was to find someplace where I could sit back and relax and forget about how hot it was, and how barren this area appeared. I just wanted to go home, and my friend agreed.

When my husband retired from teaching, we hadn’t planned on moving to the southeast.

We had lived in the Northwest our entire lives.

I’m not sure how the search managed to do it, but although we put down for one specific place in the Northwest, it brought up Royal Palm Beach, FL. It wasn’t even the beauty of that area, but when we saw the Mounts Botanical Gardens advertisement,we knew where we were going to live. We never had any children, so we didn’t need to answer to anyone about our decision. Three months later, we had found a nice home in Royal Palm Beach, FL, sold our home, and we were packed and ready to move. It was now late September, and I wondered if Mounts Botanical Gardens was open in the fall and winter. With it being Florida, I would think many school children would be taken there for field trips. When November arrived, the temperatures were still in the low eighties to mid seventies. In the Northwest, we would already have snow on the ground. We finally found our way to Mounts Botanical Gardens. It was near the airport and easy to find, but it boasted 20 acres of tropical oasis. We knew it would take us more than one trip to see everything. There were native plants,herbs, palms, roses, cactus, bromeliads, succulents, and so many more that we would have many trips back. Even if we only took, in 1 display garden a day, that’s 25 days we would have used for good purposes. We’re thinking about donating some time to the garden..

My husband and I had been getting pestered for two years about going to Disney World in Orlando, FL. Our kids have wanted to go since they were old enough to say Mickey Mouse, and this was the year we were going. I went online and got an amazing price for one week in a suite at one of the local hotels. We got three-day passes that allowed us to stay at one Disney park, or visit three different Disney parks. We had four days to do anything we wanted while in Orlando, FL. By the end of the three day pass, our kids wanted a change. They wanted to stay in the hotel and play games in the arcade. They were tired of being out in the sun and ninety degree weather. They wanted to spend an entire day playing video games and relaxing in the air conditioning. We ate at the restaurant that was in the hotel, and made reservations for a family date night at the local mystery theater restaurant. We completed our three-day pass in the Disney theme parks, and had our one day in the hotel. Now, we were ready to experience everything else Orlando had to give. Fine restaurants, tours of Everglades by airboat, and even some animal preserves. I guarantee you won’t be bored. I always take some of the tours, but I end up in the drive-thru safari. My kids love feeding the giraffes, and we don’t need to get out of the car. The windows are down and the air conditioning is running.
